William E. Hawkes Honored for Excellence in Nursing and Veteran Advocacy
William Hawkes is a successful U.S. Army veteran with an interest in helping veterans.
SAVOONGA, AK, May 24, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- William E. Hawkes retired in March of 2006 from nursing. He worked as a critical care nurse at the Durham VA Medical Center, and has been recognized as a VIP member by Cambridge Who's Who for demonstrating dedication, leadership and excellence in critical care nursing and veteran advocacy.
A successful veteran of the U.S. Army, Mr. Hawkes served two years of active duty from 1967 to 1969. During this time, he worked at the medical training center at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas and then as a combat medic with the Americal Division, 11th Infantry Brigade, 23rd Med Btn., in South Vietnam. He was honored with a Bronze Star Medal for his service.
Mr. Hawkes spent the last 10 years of his 42-year career as a dialysis nurse manager, and the 10 years prior to that as a critical care nurse at the Durham VA Medical Center. In this role, he had the opportunity to work with and care for fellow Vietnam veterans. Now retired, he continues his efforts to assist veterans by counseling those who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder. Additionally, he has created a suicide prevention program to help individuals cope with difficulties they may endure after military service. Mr. Hawkes is passionate about providing aid for those whom he considers his comrades.
Mr. Hawkes worked as a CRNA (Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist), and holds a nursing school diploma as a registered nurse and is a member of the American Nurses Association. He plans to remain active in his retirement through service to others. In addition to developing his volunteer program that benefits veterans, he manages The Emergency Food Assistance Program, the Adventist Community Service Program, and assists with suicide prevention program for the village of Savoonga, Alaska.
