Paul A. Bates is a distinguished paraprofessional and U.S. Navy veteran
Albuquerque, NM, November 12, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Paul A. Bates, Paraprofessional for Albuquerque Public Schools, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for demonstrating dedication, leadership and excellence in special education.
Paul Bates is a 20-year U.S. Navy veteran who served as a Religious Program Specialist during Operation Dessert Storm and received three Navy-Marine Corps Commendation Medals and five Navy-Marine Corps Achievement Medals. Upon completion of his service in 2003, he was motivated by his special needs daughter to pursue a career as a special education teacher. In October 2005, he testified before the New Mexico state legislative finance committee as to the job responsibilities for paraprofessionals. His testimony was instrumental in the approval of the state legislature for a 9.5% raise for paraprofessionals across the state of New Mexico. In May 2009, he was a workshop presenter at an international workshop for paraprofessionals, where he addressed the attendees on behaviour management in relation to disabled children in the classroom, management techniques for the classroom and applied behavioural analysis.
As a paraprofessional for Albuquerque Public Schools, Mr. Bates specializes in autism treatment and is responsible for assisting teachers, physical therapists, occupational therapists and language pathologists in the classroom with students with severe disabilities. He works at La Cueva High School. He attributes his success to his patience and dedication.
Mr. Bates is currently pursuing his Bachelor of Arts in Special Education from The University of New Mexico. Mr. Bates attended Central Bible College in Springfield, MO and was licensed as a minister with the Assemblies of God for twenty five years. He serves as a youth pastor in Newell, SD and Salina, KS.
His kindhearted nature shines through his volunteer efforts: he gave his time to mentor underprivileged and learning disabled elementary school children; coordinated a Thanksgiving food basket program for needy families; volunteered for an American Red Cross Hurricane Relief fund drive; served as a Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society representative processing no-interest loans to dozens of sailors in emergency situations; assisted with a children's "Just Say No" rally; coordinated efforts for a World Changers Habitat for Humanity project; coordinated a distribution of $140,000.00 worth of surplus uniforms to needy sailors; served as assistant coach for children's T-ball team; supervised the fundraising drive for and distribution of stuffed animals for the children's ward of a local hospital at Christmas time; marched in a procession to heighten public awareness for Holocaust Remembrance; volunteered 75 hours at Mary C. Alcott Elementary School in Norfolk, VA tutoring students with reading problems; coordinated a community relations project that refurbished three rooms at a children's home in Palamos, Spain; coordinated a community relations project that refurbished a house in Haifa, Israel that served as a children's home; coordinated a public relations project in cooperation with a Peace Corps
representative that cleaned up a public beach in Aqaba, Jordan and coordinated a community relations program that produced four projects in Broward County, FL and New York City, NY (one project put a roof on a Habitat for Humanity house in one day). In the future, he intends to obtain his Master's Degree and continue teaching in intensive support programs.
