Screaming Eagles of the 101st Airborne Division Association are returning to the nest and the nest this year is in Reno, NV.

/Military and Defense News Articles/ - March 27, 2008 - More than 1,000 veterans and active-duty soldiers of the famed division are expected to attend the gathering August 13-17 at the Circus/Circus Hotel for their 63rd annual reunion, said Joe Alexander of Knoxville, TN, Association President and Chairman of the Reunion Committee.
"The Association represents the most powerful and storied army division in the world. The Division's fame began with its organization early in World War II when is first commanding officer, General William C. Lee, told his troopers 'The 101st Airborne Division does not have a history, but we have a rendezvous with destiny.' Those words have proved prophetic," said Alexander.
Alexander said those attending the reunion will include veterans and active-duty service soldiers who have or are serving with the 101st Airborne Division in each of its combat engagements from World War II to Iraq and Afghanistan.
Jim Joiner of Apollo Beach, FL, Association Chairman of the Board and also a member of the reunion planning group, said items on the program at Reno will include a memorial dinner honoring all fallen Screaming Eagles, tours of the area, golf, a hospitality room, and business activities keyed on expansion of the Association's ongoing scholarship program for membership families and financial assistance for active-duty soldiers currently deployed for their third tour of combat duty abroad.
"Since the first of the Division's three tours of combat in Afghanistan and Iraq in 2002, the Association has provided more than $360,000, from charitable contributions and reunion related fund-raising activities, for families in need, recreational activities for single soldiers, child care, and a "Wounded-Warrior" program for Screaming Eagle wounded and their families during the critical period of recuperation," said Joiner
He added that all persons who have worn the Screaming Eagle patch, whether in wartime or peacetime and including former members and current 101st soldiers, are invited to participate in the reunion.
"With sizeable membership numbers in the southwestern and western regions of the country, we are expecting a significant turnout for the Reno rendezvous," said Joiner.
